big lady nasturtium vase
For a bit now I have toyed with the idea of wheel throwing the individual parts of the lady vases and then constructing them. In some ways it would be a lot easier and more consistent. But turns out, what I enjoy about making these pieces by hand is their unevenness, the parts I let go the ways they want to go, the parts I bring into sense. For me it balances out this beauty and uneasiness. It feels more like a drawing which is a place I feel at home in.
This vase was and experiment in brush mark making and seeing what would happen if I wasn't precious about painting specific flower forms and specific leaf forms. To just let the colors come together in fast fashion and then make sense of everything with all of my carving tools.
This lady is a hand built, stoneware vase, painted in hand made colored slips. The body is carved using the sgrafitto method. Her face is carved and inlaid with celadon slip.
